Legs Boelen werkte 36 jaar als docent/coördinator kunstzinnige vorming in de Penitentiaire Inrichting Vught, nam deel aan enkele Europese projecten die erop gericht zijn verschillende kunstdisciplines in te zetten om gedetineerden op een ander spoor te brengen.
En last but not least het werk als curator van verschillende tentoonstellingen over de kunst van gevangenen in verschillende landen.

Frits Gronert in Out Of Art mei 2008:
In 1992 schreef Legs Boelen de publicatie ‘Art in Prison’ over kunstwerken van jonge gedetineerden. Jaren later beleefde het boekje wegens enorme belangstelling, een herdruk. Voor het eerst had iemand dit soort geïsoleerd ontstane kunst in Nederland naar buiten gebracht. Zelfs het NOS journaal besteedde aandacht aan ‘Art in Prison’ . Ik vond het tijd om nader kennis te maken met de auteur van deze uitzonderlijke publicatie en conservator van een collectie gevangeniskunst.

Legs Boelen worked for 36 years as a teacher/coordinator of arts education at the famous Vught Penitentiary Institution and participated in several European projects aimed at using various art disciplines to help inmates find new ways. And last but not least, he curated various exhibitions on prisoner art in various countries.
